Holy Unction: The Anointing of the Sick

Holy Unction: The Anointing of the Sick

Come and See

“Is any one among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.”

(James 5:13-15)

On April 20th, 2022, Great & Holy  Wednesday, at the Saint Steven’s Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in Alhambra, California, the Orthodox faithful gathered for the Matins Service of Holy Thursday followed by the Sacrament of Holy Unction.

The service was concelebrated by His Grace Bishop Maxim, V. Rev. Lazar Vasiljevic, V. Rev. Nikola Ceko, V. Rev. Predrag Bojovic, Rev. Norman Kosanovich, and Rev. Vladan Radovanovic.

As explained by His Grace Bishop Maxim, the Sacrament of Holy Unction is offered to all for the healing of soul and body and for the forgiveness of sins. Following the service the faithful piously came forward to venerate the Holy Gospel and then proceeded in line to be anointed with the Holy Oil administered by His Grace Bishop and local and visiting clergy.
