Lazarus Saturday and Bishop Maxim’s Slava Celebration

Lazarus Saturday and Bishop Maxim’s Slava Celebration

The Western American Diocese joyfully gathered on Lazarus Saturday to celebrate both the feast and Bishop Maxim’s family Slava. The day began with the Divine Liturgy at St. Steven’s Cathedral, celebrated by His Grace Bishop Maxim together with concelebrating clergy: Fr. Nicholas Ceko, Fr. Paul Germain, and Fr. Basil Gavrilovic. A large number of faithful received Holy Communion, filling the church with prayerful unity and festal joy.

Following the service, over 200 parishioners and guests proceeded to the social hall, where the Slava banquet took place. This year’s celebration included an exhibition of Bishop Maxim’s artwork—every piece was sold, with all proceeds directed to His Grace’s charity fund assisting those in need. The Diocesan Auxiliary Sisters prepared a beautiful and delicious meal for all in attendance. The Slava bread was blessed by Fr. Nicholas, who spoke on Christ’s love for Lazarus and reflected on how that same spirit of friendship and pastoral care is embodied in Bishop Maxim’s relationship with his clergy and faithful.

During the banquet, Valerie Glover offered a thoughtful reflection on the spiritual depth of Bishop Maxim’s artistic work. She highlighted how his paintings harmonize Byzantine iconography with contemporary landscapes, using light as a theological symbol and depicting creation imbued with divine presence. The recurring imagery of boats, paths, and horizons, she noted, draws viewers into a deeper inner journey toward communion with God.

The celebration concluded with the presentation of several diocesan honors. Bishop Maxim bestowed the Order of St. Sebastian of Jackson, First Degree upon Mr. and Mrs. Steve and Laura Burge for their tireless dedication to the Western American Diocese. The Order of St. Sebastian of Jackson, Second Degree was awarded to Mr. Staniša Čović for his devoted service. In addition, Episcopal Gramatas were presented to Branimir Alex Živković, Trajče Manev, and Steva Nikolić, recognizing their faithful contributions to the life of the Church.

The day was filled with prayer, fellowship, gratitude, and the warmth of community—an inspiring celebration of life, service, and the joy of Lazarus Saturday.
