The Falling Asleep of Archimandrite Vasileios Gondikakis
With profound sorrow, the Western American Diocese announces to its Christ-loving faithful the falling asleep in the Lord, on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, of the ever-memorable Archimandrite Vasileios Gondikakis, former Abbot of the Holy Monastery of Iviron on Mount Athos.
Born in Heraklion, Crete, from a family rooted in Kefalovryso of Viannos—a blessed land that produced many souls of faith and love for the Church—Father Vasileios offered himself to God from his youth. His entire life became intertwined with the revival of Athonite monasticism.
For twenty-two years (1968–1990), he served as Abbot of the Holy Monastery of Stavronikita, staffing and organizing it, transforming it into a model cenobium. In 1990, he undertook the leadership of the Holy Monastery of Iviron, one of Mount Athos’s most historic monasteries, restoring its communal life and raising it to new spiritual heights.
With his piety, erudition, writings, and countless lectures and homilies, Father Vasileios revealed the inexhaustible wellspring of the Helleno-Orthodox tradition, nurturing in Christ generations of faithful. Elder Vasileios was also a cherished friend and a source of spiritual inspiration for many Serbian bishops, theologians, students, and faithful — in Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, and the United States. He visited Serbian communities in the United States several times, bringing his words of grace, encouragement, and spiritual renewal.
Sebastian Press of the Western American Diocese has been blessed to publish several of Elder Vasileios’ works, which continue to serve as a source of inspiration for the Anglophone world and beyond:

On Thursday, September 18, 2025, at 8:00 AM, His Grace Bishop Maximos of Los Angeles will celebrate a Trisagion for the repose of the soul of the ever-memorable Elder Vasileios at Saint George Church in San Diego.
The Western American Diocese, together with its clergy and laity, extends its heartfelt condolences to the Monastic Brotherhood of the Holy Monastery of Iviron and prays that the Lord may appoint His faithful servant as a celebrant at the Heavenly Altar, granting him the joy of the saints and the light of the Kingdom.
