Great & Holy Friday in Alhambra, California
On Great & Holy Friday, April 22, 2022, at the Saint Steven’s Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in Alhambra, California, His Grace Bishop Maxim, together with V. Rev. Lazar Vasiljevic, V. Rev. Nikola Ceko, Rev. Norman Kosanovich, Rev. Vladan Radovanovic, and all the faithful, commemorated Christ’s Passion, His death on the cross, and His burial.
On this Friday evening, at the service of Matins of Great and Holy Saturday, we commemorated the day that our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ spent in the tomb. This service, in the form of a funeral service for Christ, took place around the plaschanitiza, a shroud bearing the image of our Lord in the tomb.
At the end of the service the clergy and faithful processed around the church three times with Bishop Maxim and the clergy carrying the plaschanitza which was then placed on the tomb in the center of the church.
His Grace Bishop Maxim, at the completion of the service, described the passion, crucifixion, and burial of Christ and His descent into hades to bring His shinning light, giving life to all of those in the tombs, all those who are among the dead.
