On Thursday, February 2, the world heard of the repose in the Lord of Metropolitan John (Zizioulas) of Pergamon, the leading theologian of the Orthodox Church of our era. Athens, where the Metropolitan of Pergamon spent the last years of his life, gathered Hierarchs, clergy, and faithful people around their Bishop, teacher, professor, and friend. In the early morning hours of Saturday, February 4, a Requiem Liturgy was celebrated, which was presided over by Archbishop Eugenios of Crete. In his sermon, at the end of the Liturgy, he said that “The exit of the Hierarch John from this life becomes his entry into the Kingdom of God. He left the Church great treasure that we should keep as the apple of our eye, being obliged to show him the deepest respect for his wonderful and unrepeatable work, the work of a faithful and wise servant of God. May his prayer accompany us in our personal feat and may his memory be eternal”.
The funeral service, which was held in the early afternoon, was presided by the Metropolitan of Laodicea kyr Theodoritos, representative of His Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, with metropolitans Makarios of Aeneas, Georgios of Guinea, Ignatios of Dimitriade and Almira, Nikolaos of Masogaia and Lavreotiki, Chrysostomos of Messinia, Amphilochios of Adrianople, Nektarios of Argolis, Gregory of Perister, Damascene of Aitolia and Akarnanias, and Bishop of Los Angeles and Western America Maxim.
The funeral service was also attended by Archbishop Eugenios of Crete, Metropolitan of Krini Kyrilos, Metropolitan of Selyvria Maximos, representatives of several universities, the Academy of Athens, of which the blessed metropolitan was a member, and other cultural and educational institutions. Metropolitan Maximos of Selyvria, president of the Academy of Athens, as well as representatives of the theological faculties in Athens and Thessaloniki, said their farewells to the late Metropolitan with appropriate and touching speeches.
John Zizioulas was born on January 10, 1931. in the village of Katafygio near Kozani. He was ordained to the rank of deacon on June 14, 1986, the next day he became a presbyter, and on the day of Pentecost on 22nd of June, he was ordained as the Metropolitan of Pergamon. He dedicated his entire life to theology and the Church, wrote over 200 academic papers, 20 books, taught at various faculties, both in the East and in the West. He taught theology at prestigious theological faculties in Athens, Geneva, Edinburgh, London, Thessaloniki and others. In Athens, he was elected as a member of the Athenian Academy, and in 2002, as its president, making him the first ordained priest to preside over this highest body in Greek society. Until the end of his life, he tirelessly wrote, worked and lectured on various theological topics, leaving an indelible mark on the contemporary theological and scientific world. He received an HONORIS CAUSA from the University of Belgrade in 1991.
During his long and fruitful life, he was a witness to many secular and ecclesiastical phenomena about which he wrote, advocating for the preservation of the dignity and identity of the human person. He made an original contribution to ecclesiology, anthropology, liturgy, bioethics, canon law, etc. In his life, like no one in modern Orthodoxy, he combined worship and science, showing that the Church can be “relevant only when it recognizes the heartbeat of history and responds to the existential needs of the world.”

Сахрана Митрополита Пергамског Јована (Зизјуласа)
У четвртак, 2. фебруара текуће године, свет је задесила вест о упокојењу водећег богослова Православне Цркве, Митрополита пергамског Јована (Зизјуласа). Атина, у којој је Митрополит пергамски провео последње године свог живота, сабрала је архијереје, свештенство и верни народ да испрате овог архијереја, учитеља, професора, пријатеља. У раним јутарњим сатима суботе, 4. фебруара, служена је заупокојена Литургија којом је началствовао Архиепископ критски Евгеније. Он је у својој беседи на крају Литургије рекао да „излазак из овог живота Јована архијереја постаје његов улазак у Царство Божије. Оставио је Цркви велико благо које треба да чувамо као зеницу ока, бивајући дужни да му указујемо најдубље поштовање за његово дивно и непоновљиво дело, дело верног и мудрог слуге Божијег. Нека нас његова молитва прати у нашем личном подвигу и нека његов спомен буде вечан”.
Службом опела, која је служена у рано поподне, началствовао је митрополит лаодикијски Теодорит, представник Његове Светости Патријарха васељенског Вартоломеја, док су саслуживали архијереји енејски Макарије, гвинејски Георгије, димитријадски Игнатије, масогејски Николај, месинијски Хризостом, адријанопољски Амфилохије, арголидски Нектарије, перистеријски Григорије, етолијски и акарнарнијски Дамаскин, и Епископ лосанђелски и западноамерички Максим.
Заупокојеној служби су такође присуствовали Архиепископ критски Евгеније, Митрополит крински Кирило, Митрополит силивријски Максим, затим представници више Универзитета, Атинске академије, чији је члан био блаженопочивши митрополит, и других културних и просветних установа. Од њега су се пригодним и дирљивим беседама опростили Митрополит силивријски Максим, председник Атинске академије, као и представници теолошких факултета у Атини и Солуну.
Јован Зизjулас је рођен 10. јануара 1931. год. у селу Катафигио крај Козане. Рукоположен је у чин ђакона 14. јуна 1986. године, следећег дана за презвитера, док је за Митрополита пергамског хиротонисан на Педесетницу 22. јуна исте године. Свеколики свој живот посветио је богословљу и Цркви, написао преко 200 академских радова и око двадесет књига, а предавао је на разним факултетима, како на истоку, тако и на западу. Богословље на научавао на престижним богословским факултетима у Атини, Женеви, Единбургу, Лондону, Солуну и др. У Атини је изабран за члана Академије, а 2002. године и за њеног председника, чинећи га првим свештенослужитељем да председава овим највишим телом у грчком друштву. До краја свог живота је писао, радио и предавао на разне богословске теме, остављајући неизбрисив траг у савременом богословском и научном свету. За почасног доктора Универзитета у Београду изабран је 1991. године.
Током свог дугог и плодног живота, био је сведок многих светских и црквених феномена о којима је и писао залажући се за очување достојанства и идентитета људске личности. Дао је оригинални допринос еклисиологији, антропологији, литургици, биоетици, канонском праву итд. У животу је као ретко ко у савременом православљу спојио богослужење и науку, показавши да Црква може бити „релевантна само онда када препознаје откуцаје срца историје и одговара на егзистенцијалне потребе света”.
