Conception of the Saint John the Baptist – Cathedral Slava in San Francisco
On Sunday, October 11, 2020, our Cathedral celebrated its slava.
This was truly a special day! Our Cathedral is finally open for the faithful!
San Francisco County is one of the strictest counties nationwide when it comes to reopening places of worship. The last time His Grace Bishop Maxim served in our Cathedral was on March 15th, and right after that, all churches in San Francisco were closed in order to protect people from the spread of Covid19.
We are happy to say that all of our parishioners are healthy and well, even though we all went through difficult times with the church being closed for parishioners.
For more than 6 months Fr. Djurica served behind closed doors, with the help of his family, Jovan and Petar who were assisting in the altar and singing, and Protinica Marija who was representing our parishioners. The Divine Liturgy was streamed every Sunday.
Finally, on October 1st, the San Francisco City Health Department allowed the opening of places of worship, with strict guidelines and 25% capacity.
The Eucharistic Celebration of Cathedral Slava was magnified with His Grace Bishop Maxim presiding over Hierarchical Divine Liturgy. Parishioners were very happy to participate and receive the Holy Eucharist.
His Grace Bishop Maxim preached on the theme of the Sunday Gospel reading, and father Djurica thanked him for his spiritual guidance and care in these difficult times, when we are still under the threat of the Coronavirus pandemic. His Grace Bishop Maxim blessed out Slava Bread and Zito, which was beautifully prepared by Mirela Cukovic and her family.
Since San Francisco County does not allow gatherings inside, the Slava banquet was prepared and served on our newly upgraded patio, on the east side of the church, behind the Altar. We were blessed with the presence of our Vladika and with beautiful weather.
