Jackson, CA
A week-long Byzantine iconography course at the St. Sava Mission in Jackson, California, concluded this Friday. Under the guidance of Bishop Maxim, ten students, ranging from novices to more experienced iconographers, delved into both the theoretical and practical aspects of this sacred art form.
Each participant created a unique icon of Jesus Christ the Savior, following traditional Byzantine techniques. The students’ dedication and skill were evident in their beautifully crafted works, from the initial underpainting to the final touches of highlights and accents.
A celebratory service on the feast of the Holy Cross marked the course’s completion, honoring the opportunity to engage in this holy endeavor. Father Marko Bojovic, the local priest, played a pivotal role in organizing the event.
Reflecting on the experience, Bishop Maxim expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to share his knowledge: “It is a heavenly blessing to offer a course where we can approach the uncreated reality of the divine through colors, shapes, and lines. The students have shown great dedication and achieved remarkable results.”
The course will continue in the spring, inviting participants to further explore the intricacies of Byzantine iconography.
