Alhambra, CA — On the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, the faithful gathered at the Cathedral of Saint Simon the Monastic in Los Angeles for the Divine Liturgy. Metropolitan Grigorije addressed the congregation, which filled the cathedral for the celebration. Following the service, he met with attendees for the signing of his books published in recent years. The Divine Liturgy was concelebrated by Maxim and the Cathedral Dean, Nicholas Ceko.
Dear brothers and sisters,
Today we celebrate two things at once.
In the Feast of the Presentation, we see Christ revealed as a child in the Temple. In today’s Gospel of the Last Judgment, we see Christ as the King of glory, seated on His throne with the Father, judging the living and the dead.
The first scene is quiet and gentle. The second is overwhelming and powerful.
And yet both awaken the same question in us: Have we recognized Him? Would we recognize Him? Will we recognize Him?
Simeon was not only the one “the God-Receiver” — he was the one who saw God. He had learned how to see. It seems he spent his whole life learning that. Learning to recognize the Light that would shine in the darkness.
What he actually saw in front of him were poor, ordinary parents and a small child. Nothing spectacular. Nothing impressive. And yet he was not confused. He saw God in weakness and cried out:
“Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace… for my eyes have seen Your salvation.”
Now let us look at the Last Judgment — and try to see what people so often fail to see, or see wrongly.
Christ says something shocking and unexpected:
“I was hungry… I was thirsty… I was a stranger… and you did not feed Me, you did not give Me drink, you did not welcome Me.”
And the people ask, “When did we see You like that?”
They were looking for Him in glory, in power, in magnificent temples — but He came to them in another form: as the stranger, the poor, the forgotten.
Simeon saw God in a child. Others failed to see God in their neighbor.
Brothers and sisters, we stand here in the presence of God. We are not here only to admire the beauty of the church or to listen to beautiful singing. We are here to enter into a real and living dialogue with God — and at the heart of this Divine Liturgy, we receive Christ and carry Him, just as Simeon did. Not physically as Simeon did, but truly — in the Eucharist.
And here the question of the Last Judgment appears again. The question of every Eucharist is this: Will we recognize Him? Will we recognize Him here and now? And will we recognize Him when we leave this place — in every human face, in every living being?
Today we celebrate the Presentation of the Lord. The word itself (SRETENJE) means “a meeting.” Let us not be afraid of the meeting. Let us go out to meet Him — and to meet one another.
The Last Judgment is also a meeting — the final and ultimate encounter. We prepare for that final meeting here and now, every day, by meeting one another and learning to see the face of God in the face of the other.
Today we meet Him in the mystery of the Eucharist. In the end, we will meet Him in the glory of the eternal Eucharist.sdfx’
Between those two meetings, we are given this life.
If we follow Simeon’s example, we will know the joy of truly knowing God. And perhaps we too will be able to say, “My eyes have seen Your salvation.”
If you are afraid of the Last Judgment — if you are afraid of that question, “Did you see Me? Did you recognize Me?” — then let us at least be ready to say at least:
Lord, I tried to recognize You. Lord, I was searching to see You.
And maybe — maybe — we will be able to say:
Lord, there were moments when I saw You.
I saw You in the eyes of my neighbor.
I saw You in the face of another person.
I saw You in the beating pulse of life and in the breath of everything that lives.
It was not always. It was not often. But it was real. I tried. I longed for You.
Have mercy on me, O God — for my eyes have seen Your salvation.

Данас славимо два празника. У једном од њих, Сретењу, гледамо Христа који се показује као дете у храму. А у другом данашњем јеванђелском одломку, Недеље Страшног суда, видимо Христа као Цара славе на престолу са Оцем, како суди живима и мртвима.
Први догађај је тих, миран. Други је потресан. Међутим, и један и други догађај у нама буде исто питање: јесмо ли те, да ли бисмо те, и хоћемо ли те препознати.
Симеон није само Богопримац него и Боговидац, он је онај који је умео да види. Он се, изгледа, читав живот учио томе. Да види. Да види Светлост која ће засијати у тами. Иако пред собом заправо види сиромашне, незнатне родитеље. Не збуњује се. Он види Бога у немоћи и кличе ”Сада отпушташ слугу свога.. Видеше очи моје спасење твоје,”
Хајде сада да видимо и шта је тај Страшни суд, да видимо оно што људи обично не умеју да виде, или виде погрешно. Он, Христос, каже нешто запањујуће неочекивано: „Гладан бејах… жедан бејах… странац бејах… Не нахранисте ме, не напојисте ме, не примисте ме…” А људи питају „Када те видесмо таквог?”
Тражили су га људи у слави, у сили, у велелепним храмовима, а он им долази у другом облику, у виду странца и убогог.
Симеон је видео Бога у детету, а људи нису видели Бога у ближњем свом.
Браћо и сестре – ми стојимо у храму пред лицем Бога. Нисмо ту само да видимо лепоту храма и слушамо лепо појање. Ми смо ту да стојимо у дијалогу са Богом и да на врхунцу ове божанске службе примимо и понесемо Христа, онако како га је примио и понео Симеон. Ми не онако телесно, него онако како бива у евхаристији. Питање које се намеће је Питање страшног суда! Питање сваке евхаристије је – хоћемо ли га препознати. Хоћемо ли га препознати овде и сада, и хоћемо ли га препознати кад изађемо, у сваком лицу човечијем и сваком створењу. Данас славимо Сретење, а то значи сусрет. Немојмо се плашити сусрета и пођимо у сусрет њему и једни другима.
Страшни суд је такође сусрет, коначно Сретење. За тај коначни сусрет припремамо се овде и сада сваки дан, сусрећући једни друге и у лицу другога гледајући лице Бога свога. Данас се сусрећемо у тајни евхаристије, на крају ћемо се срести у слави вечне евхаристије. Између та два сусрета дарован нам је живот. Ако будемо следили Симеонов пример – ето радости познања или Богопознања. Моћи ћемо и ми да кажемо „видеше очи моје спасење твоје, спасење које си припремио свим људима”. Ако се плашиш страшног суда, ако се плашиш тог питања – Јеси ли ме видео и јеси ли ме препознао, хајде да макар будемо спремни да кажемо – Господе трудио сам се да те препознам, или – Господе тражио сам да
те видим. Биће добро ако будемо могли рећи – Господе, било је момената када сам те видео. Када сам те видео у очима ближњег, у лицу другога, и у откуцајима живота у свему што живи, и даху свега што дише. Није то било увек и често, али је било, трудио сам се, жудио сам. Помилуј ме Боже јер ипак те видеше очи моје!
