HOW CAN PSYCHOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE ASSIST IN SPIRITUAL LIFE?
Day Three of the Sts. Sebastian and Mardarije Orthodox Institute
Following Orthros and a continental breakfast on Thursday morning, on the feast day of the Holy and Righteous Simeon the God-receiver Anna, the final plenary session began, entitled: How Can Psychologic Knowledge Assist in Spiritual Life?
Fr. Vasileios spoke of the many misunderstandings that feed the controversy between psychology and theology. Distinctions, however, should be made so that we know to differentiate between issues, mental disorders and problems that can be addressed by a priest and those which require professional psychologists. Interestingly enough, according to some studies patients tend to first go to the minister. Mental disorder are of the mental functions such as our thoughts, feelings and desires. When they are disturbed we have disorders. These disorders have been emphasized by modernity and is one reason people seek fiction in order to cultivate their emotional world, to reflect on their own inner space.
Psychology, in other words, is the fundamental language today just as philosophy was in the first centuries after Christ. While the two have their own respective vocabularies we need to strive to capture the relationship between the two worlds, discovering why there are so many tensions between the two. In fact, we find much psychology in the Patrisitic writings beginning with the Holy Apostle Paul who...

(The Christian Heritage of Kosovo and Metohija: The Historical and Spiritual Heartland of the Serbian People).

Jackson, CA - Friday, September 2, 2016 - Nestled in the rolling hills of Amador County is the beautiful and historic St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church in the small, quiet town of Jackson, California. It was the site of this year’s Diocesan Days celebration of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Western America, which takes place each year on Labor Day weekend.
By noon clergy, coming from various parts of the vast diocese, slowly began to arrive at the beautiful St. Sava Camp where they were met and received a blessing from their ruling hierarch, His Grace Bishop Maxim of Western America. Mr. Lubardic’s topic was entitled, Learning with St. Paul: How is the word of God (kerygma) to be offered to the world – Evangelization, Enculturation, Mission. Professor Lubardic spoke eloquently, taking as a central point in St. Paul’s preaching his interaction with the Athenians in Acts 17:22-31. While the speaker spoke at length of the philosophical thought of the people St. Paul was encountering and gave a more clearer picture to his listeners that they might grasp his evangelization tactics – this offering of the...

Attending the service was His Grace, Bishop Maxim and the clergy brotherhood of the Diocese of Western America. The event was especially marked by the presence of His Grace, Bishop Atanasije, retired bishop of Herzegovina. Vespers was followed by dinner. A wine and cheese tasting then gave guests the opportunity to meet Bishop Atanasije in person and receive his blessing. The assembly was also blessed by the presence of Bishop Daniel of Santa Rosa, newly-consecrated assistant bishop of the OCA’s diocese of the West. The retreat, which claims the patronage of Sts. Sebastian and Mardarije, will include multiple sessions over several days which will draw from the wisdom of Bishop Atanasije and his lifelong witness to the living tradition of the Orthodox Faith and life in Christ.
Saint Steven's Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of the Western American Diocese was honored to host the Orthodox Christian bishops and priests from the West Coast for the annual Pan-Orthodox Clergy Conference held November 16-17, 2016. As 2016 was the year of the historic Great and Holy Council of the Orthodox Church which was held on the island of Crete in June, the bishops, priests and deacons gathered to reflect on the importance of the conciliar nature of the Church and the meaningful contributions of the Holy Councils and their implications in the life of the Church. It was a great blessing for us to host this important gathering which brought the Orthodox clergy on the West Coast together in brotherly love and energized them in their ministry of service to God and His faithful people entrusted to their pastoral care.
During his “Vidovdan 2015” voyage to the Diocese of Western Europe His Grace Bishop Maxim had a very fruitful visit. On Saturday, June 27, accompanied by Fr. Zeljko and Novak Bilic, the Bishop visited the monastic community of the Nativity of the All-Holy Mother of God in Bois-Salair (West France). The abbess of the monastery Héléna with six sisters offered a warm reception. Bishop Luka of the Serbian Diocese also gave a cordial welcome to bishop Maxim in Paris.

At the church hall a vivid and arresting presentation on the book the book The Christian Heritage of Kosovo and Metohija took place. Bishop Maxim and Ljubomir Mihailovic spoke about the significance of St. Vitus Day for Europe and for the Serbian people. After the battle, in the Cathedral of Notre Dame Te Deum of thanksgiving for the success of the Christian arms were actually celebrated in the presence of the King of France. It is not a mere chance that, referring in specific to the artistic and spiritual heritage of Kosovo, Andre Malraux said: “Culture, when it is the most precious possession, is never the past.”

The Holy Assembly has established that the permanent annual commemoration of the Holy Hierarch Mardarije be on December 12, and Father Sebastian on November 30, when the Divine Liturgy will be served and the service chanted (hymns, troparion, and kontakion) and having their icons piously venerated.
Soon, this holy act of the Assembly will be announced to other Orthodox Churches throughout Ecumeni (the inhabited world).
Adding the names of the Holy Mardarije of Libertyville and Holy Sebastian of Jackson is a great event of our Church.
This same day, the Holy Assembly has celebrated the memory of the Holy New-Martyrs who suffered in Prebilovac (Herzegovina).

During the meeting, which took place in a spirit of open exchange in the personal office of the Ecumenical Patriarch, the hierarchs reviewed with His All-Holiness the work of the Assembly of Bishops, especially as it relates to the overall work of its committees. Particular attention was given to the work of the Committees for Pastoral Practice and Canonical Regional Planning. The hierarchs also discussed a number of challenges and opportunities in the formulation of a proposed plan for the restructuring of the Orthodox Church in the United States.
Joining the Ecumenical Patriarch, Elder Metropolitan John of Pergamon discussed the mission of the Assemblies of Bishops as originally envisioned at their inception in Chambésy in 2009. Both the Ecumenical Patriarch and Metropolitan John commended the efforts of the US hierarchs, and acknowledged their work as a model for inter-Orthodox cooperation.
Present at the meeting with the Ecumenical Patriarch and Elder Metropolitan John of Pergamon were the following members of the Executive Committee: Archbishop Demetrios (Ecumenical Patriarchate, Assembly Chairman), Bishop John (Moscow Patriarchate, Second-Vice Chairman), Metropolitan Antony (Treasurer), Bishop Longin (Patriarchate of Serbia), Archbishop Nicolae (Patriarchate of Romania), Metropolitan Joseph (Patriarchate of Bulgaria), Bishop Saba (Patriarchate of Georgia). Also present were Bishop Maxim (Coordinator for Committees) and Metropolitan Tikhon (OCA).
At the conclusion of the meeting the hierarchs departed with a renewed spirit of love and unity, eagerly looking forward to the annual General Assembly Meeting, which will take place in Chicago from September 14-17, 2015.

Archimandrite Dr. John Pantelimon Manoussakis, Associate Professor of Philosophy at the Holy Cross Theological School, Dr. Cornelia Tsakiridou, professor of Philosophy at LaSalle University, and Dr. George Kordis, professor Emeritus of Iconography at University of Athens. The prayerful responses, led by Jonathan Braun, were beautifully sung by the children attending the Cathedral's summer camp.
Following the Liturgy a luncheon was held to congratulate and welcome Deacon Vladan and his wife Dejana into the Western American Diocese. Deacon Vladan has been traveling from Serbia to the Western Diocese for several years, volunteering and assisting in the Diocesan office. He will now serve as the Diocesan Deacon.
May God grant him many years of service to Christ and His Holy Church. We prayerfully wish that he would preserve and multiply the grace that he has been given today so that when the time comes, he would receive (or be ordained to) the priesthood, thus being numbered among the presbyters of Christ’s Church.
Chicago, IL--The Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America convened its sixth annual meeting Tuesday, September 15 in Chicago, IL with 45 hierarchs in attendance. The day began with a celebration of the Divine Liturgy at St John the Baptist Orthodox Church in Des Plaines, IL.
Archbishop Demetrios, Chairman of the Assembly, opened the meeting. His remarks can be read here in their entirety. General business followed, including acceptance of the minutes from Assembly V, a financial report from the Assembly’s treasurer, Metropolitan Antony, and brief reports from the Secretary of the Assembly, Bishop Basil, and the Chairman of the Committees, Bishop Maxim. Metropolitan Antony reported that a budget shortfall is expected and expressed his hope that the hierarchs would seek donations from the faithful to meet the shortfall. Bishop Maxim called attention to the committees that have been particularly active to-date: Agencies and Endorsed Organizations, Canonical Regional Planning, Ecumenical Relations, Financial Affairs, Legal Affairs, Pastoral Practice, Monastic Communities, and Youth.
The hierarchs then devoted several hours to canonical regional planning, the first of two such planned sessions. Each of the first hierarchs of the Assembly’s 12 jurisdictions expressed his opinion of a proposal that had been circulated in advance by the Committee for Canonical Regional Planning. The proposal by the Committee for Canonical Regional Planning focuses on three main areas of common work over the next three years: diverging pastoral practices among the jurisdictions; development of possible models for a canonical reorganized Church administration; and greater cooperation and integration of jurisdictional ministries and departments.
The hierarchs were allotted approximately 15 minutes each to express their views on the proposal. Metropolitan Joseph of the Antiochian Archdiocese was not present; his statement was read on his behalf....

His talk centered on the gospel event found in the 14th chapter of St. Matthews gospel. Namely, Jesus' walking on the water. The theme was the human conditioin of fear, which we collectively run away from but cannot escape. As he did in previous talks, Dr. Lubardic disected...
An Orthodox community had formed in San Francisco in 1858, called the “Greek-Russian Slavonian Eastern Church and Benevolent Society.” The community consisted of Russians, Serbs, Greeks, and Syrians who had come to California in the first years of the Gold Rush. Today, the city of San Francisco, the leading financial and cultural center of Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area, has many Orthodox Parishes. The dawn of the history of the Serbian Parish of Saint John the Baptist begins with the arrival of the late Right Reverend Father Archimandrite George Kodzic in San Francisco in February of 1919.
On November 13, 2016, His Grace Bishop Maxim served the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy in our Cathedral. After the Matins, and prior to the Divine Liturgy, Luka Erceg, dedicated parishioner and church council member was honored to receive the first degree order, by being tonsured a reader (čtec) by His Grace. The tonsuring occurred following the Great Doxology. Luka was led by Father Djurica and Deacon Vladan to the center of the solea in front of the Bishop. Following three prostrations toward the Holy Altar and one prostration before His Grace Bishop Maxim. His Grace then laid his hand on Luka’s head and both the Deacon and His Grace led the prayers of the tonsuring. Luka has been assisting Fr. Djurica in the Altar since he moved to San Francisco few years ago. Many parishioners were present along with Luka’s family. The ordination or tonsuring of a reader (čtec) is a first degree order. It is a commitment by the new reader to continue learning and reading of our Lord Jesus Christ with the goal of serving our Lord, His Church, and the community. It is not an accolade, rather a commitment to even more service to our Lord. The ordination may...

Liturgy for 5th Sunday after Pentecost and Synaxis of the Holy, Glorious, and All-Praised Twelve Apostles
It was a very beautiful and quite hot morning on July 13, 2014 in the Great Central Valley when His Grace, Bishop Maxim, arrived at St. Peter the Apostle Church in Fresno, California. The bells were ringing, the altar boys were smiling, and the choir was singing as the parish clergy greeted His Grace. Father George Gligich held the gospel with Deacon John Davis censing as the procession moved through the center of the church surrounded by a large, enthusiastic, and overjoyed crowd consisting of both regular parishioners and visitors. Our dear Bishop venerated the most holy relics of St. Peter and St. Paul, which were present thanks to the goodness of Father Gustavo Lopez of San Joachim Catholic Church in Madera, who brought them and stayed for Liturgy in honor of our church’s feast day. The entrance and vesting prayers preceded a blessing from His Grace and the beginning of the Divine Liturgy. From the first to the concluding prayer, our beloved Bishop presided over a Liturgy full of the beauty, power, and grace of God apparent to all and made possible only by the presence of the Holy Spirit.
A Pan-Orthodox clergy retreat was held, November 10–12, 2014 at the St. Nicholas Ranch and Retreat Center in Dunlap, California (near Fresno). Present at the retreat, together with around 80 priests, were the following hierarchs of various Orthodox jurisdictions of California: Metropolitan Gerasimos (Greek Orthodox Church), Bishop Maxim (Serbian Orthodox Church), and Bishop Benjamin (Orthodox Church in America). Archbishop Joseph (Antiochian Orthodox Church) and Archbishop Kyrill (Russian Orthodox Church Abroad) were absent.
THIS IS THE BLESSED SABBATH!
As it is explained in the Synaxarion of this day, “on Great and Holy Saturday do we celebrate the divine-bodily burial of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and His descent into Hell, by which being called from corruption, our race passed to life eternal.” This is not only the eve of salvation. It is the very day of our salvation. “This is the blessed Sabbath, this is the day of rest, whereon the Only Begotten Son of God has rested from all His deeds.” This is the day of the Descent into Hell. And the Descent into Hell is already the Resurrection.
May we all be tuned to the vibration of the earthquake that does away with hell and raises the dead!
Clergy and faithful filled the St. George Serbian Church in San Diego, the host church of the 3rd Annual Sts. Sebastian and Mardarije Orthodox Institute, for the morning Orthos service on Tuesday, February 14, 2017, the feast day of the Holy Martyr Tryhon of Phrygia. Orthros was served by Hieromonk Fr. Platon (Jovic), a visiting monk from the Diocese of Banja Luka.
His Grace Bishop Maxim of the Western American Diocese welcomed all clergy and laity, many of whom were attending from other dioceses. He welcomed His Grace Bishop Irinej of the Eastern American Diocese who also greeted everyone at the beginning of this multi-day event. V. Rev. Dobrivoje Milunovic, president of the Clergy Brotherhood of the Serbian Orthodox Church, greeted the Instittue on behalf of the Brotherhood. Finally, Fr. Damascene introduced this year's speaker Rev. Fr. Vasileios Thermos, MD, PhD.
Before Fr. Vasileios began his first plenary session he spent a few moments reflecting on his personal connection with Serbia and the Serbian people which began while he was a young student of medicine. He had the opportunity and blessing of meeting Fr. Justin Popovic, of blessed memory, a year before his repose. It was on that occasion that Fr. Justin gifted to him a small Divine Liturgy service book in which he inscribed a small note, a gift which he treasures to this day.
The title of the first session was: Addiction and the person: A Psychological and Theological Approach. Addiction is most commonly associated with dependence on...

Similarly, the beauty of this temple, erected in 1957, and the preservation of it was evident.
Noticeably missing was the rector Very Reverend George Gligich who could not attend due to a medical situation.
For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and His Name shall be called THE ANGEL OF GREAT COUNCIL,
Wonderful Councelor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
|We lift up our hearts to Things Above as we praise our Savior, the Angel of Great Council, who grants us peace and heals every division in His creation. With Him, every expression of joy over life, of wonderment over the unknown, the desire to transcend death, and to seek justice for suffering people - especially in Kosovo and Syria - continue to exist and are brought into sharper focus.
By sending you our Festal greetings and prayerful wishes along with our gratitude for your support, we want to say how much we appreciate your support of our Diocese this year!
May God bless you and your families!

During the weekend of March 26-27, we enjoyed a wonderful visit from His Grace, Bishop Maxim. Preparations for his visit began very early with making plans for meals and cleaning the church. We also completed some icons that had been waiting for mounting and hanging for quite some time. His Grace's upcoming visit was good incentive!
Since the weekend of His Grace's visit coincided with the commemoration of St Gregory Palamas, we had asked him to speak for a few minutes on hesychasm and the prayer of the heart which were major issues in St Gregory's life. His talk was very beneficial especially for our large group of recently baptized members to our parish. Since his last visit, we have been blessed to bring in over 10 people to the Orthodox Church. We have not seen His Grace for close to 2 years.
The visit began with vespers, but not before His Grace was “piped in” by a bagpiper (John Elliott, 11-year-old son of Fr George) playing “Amazing Grace”. His Grace enjoyed the unusual display of welcome. Bagpipes especially in England and Scotland have been used to usher in important persons. Their sound carries throughout the land far and wide so they are extremely effective at announcing the arrival of august persons most often either royalty or chieftans. How much more so that bagpipes be used to proclaim the arrival of God's servant, the bishop! On Sunday morning, His Grace was treated to being piped in with St Nicholai Velimirovich's Pascha melody “People rejoice!”. As the piper led him to the church playing the tune, Bishop Maxim sang along.
Liturgy was was beautiful but challenging as our parish is very out of practice with hierarchical liturgies. It was wonderful to hear the...
Епископ Максим посетио Јуџин и Портланд поводом Храмовне славе Св. Aрхиђакона и Првомученика Стефана.
On Saturday and Sunday, August 27-28, 2016, the Serbian Orthodox Church of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Fair Oaks California celebrated its Slava.
One by one the cars started arriving and people began greeting each other. As we each entered our beautiful Church, we immediately felt the peace we would be blessed with for the entire weekend. We were not to be disappointed.
As candles were lit, as icons were venerated, as our places were taken, all of us breathed in the scent of holiness. The flowers gracing the icons so lovingly made and placed by Luba Karnaaokh added the final element showing love to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
With the entrance of His Grace Bishop Maxim, the newly assigned Diocesan Deacon Vladan Radovanovic, Deacon Dragan Stojanovich from Jackson, along with Proto Dane and Proto William, we were ready to begin. The evening Vesper service was beautiful and somber. Vladika Maxim led the prayerful group who had gathered. Three talented young Chanters filled the Church with their upraised voices. Our own Dusan Radosavljevic had invited two of his friends, Michail “Micho” Slavko (who is Bulgarian) and Dillon Diamandopoulos (who is Greek) to participate in the service. Several times the absolutely perfect harmony of their voices merged with the voice of our Beloved Vladika Maxim. At those moments the rest of us felt our hearts transported upwards. Later, Dusan admitted “we sang the first part of Vespers according to the long sticheraic genre that the Athonites repopularized. I felt like I had been transported to Chilandar Monastery.” (Mt. This year marked the 16 gathering of the local Church in the West. The presiding hierarch, His Grace Bishop Maxim, convened the clergy, monastics, and laity of his diocese, affirming the Eucharistic dimension of the local Church of God; that the Liturgy itself is the center of our life and a very act of passage and ascension into the Kingdom of God and the Future Life.
The theme for the 2012 diocesan days pointed to this often forgotten dimension of the Church and her Eucharistic gathering. “Remembering the Future Things: an End even greater than the beginning,” points to the very function of theleitourgia as the gathering and the work of God’s Church to reveal that the true meaning of all things is in Christ - to actually become the manifestation of the new creation redeemed by Jesus Christ.
