Protodeacon Rados M., our guest from the Diocese of Zica gave a beautiful sermon about the life of St. Sava. A festive banquet and St. Sava Day Children's Program began at 12:00Noon. Since the weekend of His Grace's visit coincided with the commemoration of St Gregory Palamas, we had asked him to speak for a few minutes on hesychasm and the prayer of the heart which were major issues in St Gregory's life. His talk was very beneficial especially for our large group of recently baptized members to our parish. Since his last visit, we have been blessed to bring in over 10 people to the Orthodox Church. We have not seen His Grace for close to 2 years.
The visit began with vespers, but not before His Grace was “piped in” by a bagpiper (John Elliott, 11-year-old son of Fr George) playing “Amazing Grace”. His Grace enjoyed the unusual display of welcome. Bagpipes especially in England and Scotland have been used to usher in important persons. Their sound carries throughout the land far and wide so they are extremely effective at announcing the arrival of august persons most often either royalty or chieftans. How much more so that bagpipes be used to proclaim the arrival of God's servant, the bishop! On Sunday morning, His Grace was treated to being piped in with St Nicholai Velimirovich's Pascha melody “People rejoice!”. As the piper led him to the church playing the tune, Bishop Maxim sang along.

Sts. Sebastian and Mardarije Orthodox Institute
Tuesday, February 17, 2015 - Day Two
The second day of the Institute began again with the celebration of Orthros. The service was chanted in the beautiful, monophonic Serbian melodies in both English and Slavonic. Session IV of institute featured Bishop Atanasije and was moderated by Fr. Nicholas Ceko, Fr. Djokan Majstorovic and Lazar Supic. The theme of the session, New Pascha-Divine Liturgy in the Land of the Living, addressed the liturgical dimension to all of life. Man is most himself as he lives in and through the liturgy, while consecrating the world around him into mystery of Christ. Questions addressed issues pertaining to the the Liturgy and how it’s celebrated as well as how to correctly approach renewal/restoration in the liturgical life of the Church.
After a brief break for lunch and rest, the fifth session began, which addressed the topic of Synodality and Canonical Tradition. As bishop Atanasije indicated, the canonical tradition of Orthodoxy flows out of the worship of the Church, and especially out of the Divine Liturgy. Even the three-fold ordained ministry of the Church, that of Bishop, Priest, and Deacon, arises from the mystery of the life of the Christ as it’s experienced within the liturgy. Canons, too, provide continuity to our worship and safety to the faithful as we attempt to navigate the trials of this present world. The session was adeptly moderated His Grace, Bishop Maxim, as well as Fr. Dobrivoje Milunovic and Fr. Zivojin Jakovljevic.
St. Sava Church in Jackson, California, was consecrated on the Feast of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple on December 4, 1894. In recent years, the parish has designated the first Sunday of December as “Founders Day” in order to celebrate the consecration of the church and to offer a parastos for Fr. Sebastian Dabovich and all the founding members. Additionally, the late Cedo Saraba would sponsor a Bakalar Luncheon on this date to help raise funds for the parish. After Cedo’s untimely passing, the Saraba family has continued to sponsor this meal and to ask for memorial prayers for all their departed family members.

March 9-10, 2016
His Grace arrived in the late evening of Wednesday and was joyfully greeted at the airport by two of the sisters. Upon reaching the monastery, he was escorted to his guest quarters under the silent, magnificently starry desert sky.
In the morning, His Grace served the Hierarchical Liturgy. After the Small Entrance, His Grace performed the Service of the Tonsure into the Rassophore for one of the sisters, now newly-tonsured Sister Syncletica. As a special gift, he presented her with an icon of the Theotokos, depicted with a very sweet countenance, painted by his own mother.
On Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at 9:00 p.m. at the Christ the Savior Serbian Orthodox Church in Arcadia, California, His Grace, Bishop Grigorije of Zahum-Hercegovina, His Grace, Bishop Maxim of the Western American Diocese, Hieromonk Sava, Abbott of the Tvrdos Monastery, local clergy, and many faithful prayerfully gathered for an All-Night Vigil (Feast Day Vigil and Divine Liturgy) for the Feast of the Entry into the Temple of the Most Holy Theotokos.
All who attended symbolically participated in the Vigil of the Hilandar Monastery, where the monastics celebrate this Feast as their Slava.
How is it possible that each Slava celebration is totally different from every other one? There is much hard work and anxiety that all will be in readiness by many of us – from the ones who clean the Church and grounds to the ones who prepare the food to the Clergy who come to pray with us. Then, God, in His infinite wisdom and love for us, reaches down to us and grants us an abundance of excitement and joy on the day of the Slava. And all is right with the world and with us.

We must be a light on a hill without compromising the Faith which we have kept and must continue to keep. Session VIII was moderated by Fr. Predrag Bojovic, Fr. Ljubisa Brnjos.

Chicago, IL--The Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America convened its sixth annual meeting Tuesday, September 15 in Chicago, IL with 45 hierarchs in attendance. The day began with a celebration of the Divine Liturgy at St John the Baptist Orthodox Church in Des Plaines, IL.
Archbishop Demetrios, Chairman of the Assembly, opened the meeting. His remarks can be read here in their entirety. General business followed, including acceptance of the minutes from Assembly V, a financial report from the Assembly’s treasurer, Metropolitan Antony, and brief reports from the Secretary of the Assembly, Bishop Basil, and the Chairman of the Committees, Bishop Maxim. Metropolitan Antony reported that a budget shortfall is expected and expressed his hope that the hierarchs would seek donations from the faithful to meet the shortfall. Bishop Maxim called attention to the committees that have been particularly active to-date: Agencies and Endorsed Organizations, Canonical Regional Planning, Ecumenical Relations, Financial Affairs, Legal Affairs, Pastoral Practice, Monastic Communities, and Youth.
The hierarchs then devoted several hours to canonical regional planning, the first of two such planned sessions. Each of the first hierarchs of the Assembly’s 12 jurisdictions expressed his opinion of a proposal that had been circulated in advance by the Committee for Canonical Regional Planning. The proposal by the Committee for Canonical Regional Planning focuses on three main areas of common work over the next three years: diverging pastoral practices among the jurisdictions; development of possible models for a canonical reorganized Church administration; and greater cooperation and integration of jurisdictional ministries and departments.
The hierarchs were allotted approximately 15 minutes each to express their views on the proposal. Metropolitan Joseph of the Antiochian Archdiocese was not present; his statement was read on his behalf....

Seattle is in the top 5 rainiest U.S. cities by number of precipitations days, and it gets the least amount of annual sunlight of all major cities in the lower-48 states. This city experiences moderate to heavy rain during the months of November, December, and January. However, during this last Archpastoral visit of His Grace our Bishop Maxim to his humble flock and parishes dedicated to St. Sava and The Protection of the Holy Theotokos, we had a sunny and crisp weekend.

Predrag’s residence, His Grace and Deacon Zoran were greeted by Fr. THIS IS THE BLESSED SABBATH!
As it is explained in the Synaxarion of this day, “on Great and Holy Saturday do we celebrate the divine-bodily burial of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and His descent into Hell, by which being called from corruption, our race passed to life eternal.” This is not only the eve of salvation. It is the very day of our salvation. “This is the blessed Sabbath, this is the day of rest, whereon the Only Begotten Son of God has rested from all His deeds.” This is the day of the Descent into Hell. And the Descent into Hell is already the Resurrection.
May we all be tuned to the vibration of the earthquake that does away with hell and raises the dead!

A very joyous and Sretna Slava to His Grace Bishop Maxim! Eis polla eti despota!
St, Andrew Fool-for-Christ Church in Anderson, CA was visited by His Grace, April 13 and 14th. We had a very nice Vespers service which was followed by a meeting in which many aspects of parish life were discussed. I think the most important point that was raised by Bp Maxim was the need to accept people where they are in life, just as Christ did. Expectations will be disappointed unless we learn to forbear one another and hold fast to the teachings of Christ and His Church.
The next morning we had a Hierarchal Liturgy which was served by His Grace, Hieromonk Damascene from St Herman's Monastery, Fr Dn Philip Mayer and four acolytes.
The service was attended by nuns from St Xenia Skete in Wildwood and four other monks from St Herman's Monastery. His Grace stayed for our trapeza meal and again shared his extensive knowledge of the Holy Fathers. He also presented to our church a print of an icon of Jesus Christ Pantocrator painted by his iconography teacher. We are very grateful for the thoughtful gift and have a wonderful place to hang it.
His Grace left in the early afternoon but not until after many extended goodbyes.

Christopher, as he was then known, entered the St. Herman of Alaska Monastery as a novice on in February 1988. He was tonsured into the riassa in November of that same year, on the feast of St. Paisius Velichkovsky, after whom he was named. In March 1992 he was tonsured into the small schema. A Message from His Grace, Bishop Maxim
on Great & Holy Friday
On the afternoon of Good Friday, we conduct the service of the Great Vespers with great solemnity. This Vesper service concludes the remembrance of the events of the Lord's passion, and leads us towards watchful expectation as we contemplate the mystery of the Lord's descent into Hades, the theme of Great Saturday In popular language the Vesper Service of Great Friday is often called the Apokathelosis, a name derived from the liturgical reenactment of the deposition of Christ from the Cross.

From Sunrise to Sunset Avenue, heading west along one of those gorgeous, tree-lined streets that you find all throughout the cozy community of Fair Oaks, look to your right after passing the sign for the cemetery. Turn your gaze upward toward the heavens. You will suddenly gasp as you see one of the most impressive and elegant examples of Eastern Orthodox Church architecture that you’ve ever seen on the West Coast. You will behold the house that Miladin built.
Since he arrived in 1960, Fr. Miladin Garic was the spiritual force behind the Serbian Orthodox community in the east Sacramento region. Fr. Miladin fell asleep in the Lord on Nov. 24th, 2015, and now lies next to his beloved wife, Nina, in a churchyard on a peaceful hillside facing the very first Serbian Orthodox Church in America, in Jackson, where he also served as priest for several years. Such was the life of this dynamic churchman, affectionately called “Proto Garic” by his flock, that Jesus’ words immediately come to mind: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
"How beautiful and what a great blessing it is to be gathered here in church, in God's house," His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Irinej exclaimed with joy at the conclusion of the Holy Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on the third and final day of this year's Diocesan Days. And truly what a blessing it is each and every year when the entire diocese - the clergy and laity - come together and gather in one place, around one altar, around their hierarch on that most sacred day of , the Lord's Day, for the Holy Eucharist. This year the faithful of the Western American Diocesan had the added joy of having the first hierarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Irinej of Serbia, lead them in that eucharistic joy.
In his homily following the gospel reading, His Grace Bishop Benjamin of San Francisco and the West interpreted the morning's gospel reading of the marriage feast and the need for us to lead such lives that our garments be without blemish when we too are called to the feast. The bishop touched upon St. Sebastian's many great qualities and the great blessing of his glorification that he be an example not only to the Serbian community, but to all Orthodox. He thanked Bishop Maxim and presented him with an icon of St. Sebastian holding the Russian church he grew up in as a child in San Francisco.
The faithful who filled the church for the morning's liturgy filled both the main hall and patio for the banquet. The host priest, Protopresybter-Stavrophor Nikola Ceko, emceed the program which included a performance by the Phoenix singing group "Breza" and a...

Paisius also from St. Herman's. After the beautiful litrugy, we crowded into the trapeza for a wonderful meal of salmon and rice and vegetables.

Spiritually provocative. Clinically informed. Fr. Vasilios Thermos' visit to the Sacramento "Synaxis" of young adults and Orthodox Christian Fellowship at California State University, Sacramento proved to be a unique and illuminating experience for all who attended.
His insights into the fields of theology and psychology, with a strong undercurrent in psychoanalytic thought, served as the evening's subject matter, backed by decades of clinical research and prayerful consideration.
From the vantage point of our post-millennial culture, Fr. Vasilios' juxtaposition between the fields of psychology and theology could be rendered as a re-articulation of the severance and epistemological disconnect between the ancient "psyche" (spirit) and God of modernity. This cleft, or split, is nothing more than the symptom of a genealogical trauma, a suffocation and resuscitation of the symbolic Father by the great Nietzchean experiment and its failure to transform or subvert the dominant discourses of For Fr. Vasilios, the historical surrogation of "modern" man and his evolution into a "post-modern" being was doubly implicated by technology and the false reassurance that modernity was (or is) supposedly an unfinished project.

On February 14, St Theosevia Centre for Christian Spirituality in Oxford hosted a promotion of a truly splendid production—monograph on The Christian Heritage of Kosovo and Metohija. Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokleia, Bishop Maxim of Western America and Prof. Olivera Popovic from Oxford University spoke about this volume.
Bishop Maxim gave a clear and helpful introduction to the book and to its purpose describing it as “a work of love”. The book itself is very beautifully prepared, and most of the articles are very moving, bearing witness to the sufferings of the Serbian people but also to their desire for peace and the finding of a way ahead which conserves the spiritual tradition of the Church and acknowledges the long history of Kosovo as the cradle of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
Metropolitan Kallistos welcomed everybody at the launching of this, as he said, “fascinating volume with many learned and informative articles but also colored illustrations of very high standard.” He recalled visits that he made to Kosovo (first in 1970 and in 2014). Although the history of Serbia from the 14th century is a history of martyrdom, the heritage has not been destroyed and he expressed his belief that the Serbian will continue to be faithful to its heritage, that the memory of Kosovo will continue to flourish. With reference to the testimony of the book, which according to him is “a definitive book on the Christian heritage of Kosovo and Metohija”, Metropolitan said that we need to remember that beauty is a quality of God and of Christian life. And there is much that is beautiful to which the book bears witness.
Metropolitan Kallistos presented the book to the Bodleian Library, the main research library of the University of Oxford...

1. THE HOLY MARTYR CECILIA
Cecilia was born in Rome of wealthy and eminent parents. She had great faith in Christ the Lord and a great zeal for the Faith. Vowing life-long virginity to God, St. Cecilia wore a coarse hair shirt beneath the costly raiment that her parents gave her. When her parents coerced her into marriage with Valerian, a pagan, Cecilia counseled her bridegroom on their wedding night to go to Bishop Urban to be baptized, and then live in chastity. Accepting the Christian Faith, Valerian also converted his brother Tiburtius. Soon after, both brothers were condemned to death for their faith. But their faithfulness did not falter, even in the face of death. Led to the place of execution, these wonderful brothers also succeeded in converting the captain of the guard, Maximus, to the Faith. Then all three suffered together for Christ the Lord. St. Cecilia buried their bodies together. Cecilia was then brought to trial, for she tirelessly won pagans over to the Christian Faith. In only one evening, she won over four hundred souls. When the judge asked her from whence such boldness came, she answered: "From a pure conscience and undoubting faith." After cruel torture, Cecilia was condemned to beheading. The executioner struck her three times on the neck with the sword, but he was unable to kill her. She was only wounded, and blood flowed from her wounds, which the faithful collected in handkerchiefs, sponges and bowls for the sake of healing. Three days after this, the martyr and virgin of Christ gave her soul to her Lord, with Whom she eternally rejoices. St. Cecilia suffered with the others in about the year 230 A.D. Her relics lie in Rome, in the church dedicated to...

FROM BISHOP MAXIM
When you prefer temporary things over love
If you totally fulfill the command to love your neighbor, never show bitterness or resentment against him for whatever sorrow he caused you. Otherwise, it is obvious that you prefer temporary things over love; in trying to attain them, you fight against your brother.
