Source: Our View - The Youth Pages of the Path of Orthodoxy, May 2014

Q. Would you please explain the significance fo the Ascension of our Lord that we celebrate forty days after the Pascha?

A. The Ascendion of our Lord is always celebrated on the fortieth day after Pascha, since it took place as recorded in the Scripture on the fortieth day.  In the Orthodox Church calendar it is considered a movable feast day, in other words, the date of its celebration depends on the date when Pascha is being celebrated.  What is important to remember is that it is always on the fortieth day after Pascha and it is always on a Thursday.
